Questions and answers
Who is chiropractic treatment suitable for?
Chiropractic treatment is suitable for everyone, including children, the elderly, pregnant women and sports enthusiasts. Your
chiropractor will help you to maintain your own health, and keep your body
working as it should, by offering exercise and lifestyle advice with the
aim of reducing the likelihood of your pain returning.
Will I receive treatment on the first visit?
In most cases treatment will begin on the first visit. Occasionally
X-Rays or MRI scans are needed before treatment can begin.
When can I expect to see results?
For the more simple cases, improvements are noticed after just a few
visits. For more longstanding conditions, it may take a little longer. We
will advise you as to what to expect and whether your condition requires
long-term care.
Does chiropractic treatment hurt?
No, chiropractic treatment is not painful, when performed by a
qualified professional. If acute muscle spasm is present over the area to
be treated, you may feel some short-term discomfort. If your problem has
been untreated for a long time, you may experience some post-treatment
soreness. This will soon pass as your body begins to adjust. We will be
able to tell you if this is likely to happen and how to minimise any
discomfort.
What is the popping or clicking noise that I hear when I have an
adjustment?
It is not bone rubbing on bone. When the two surfaces of the joint are
moved apart rapidly, as happens in a chiropractic adjustment, there is a
change of pressure within the joint space. This may sometimes cause a
bubble of gas to 'pop' - but this sound is not significant, and does not
hurt.
I'm not sure if I should see a chiropractor for my condition what
should I do?
We allow anyone to book a free, no obligation, discussion. This
enables us to find out if we think that chiropractic can help your
condition. You get a chance to meet us and decide if you would like us to
help you.
What if the problem is something more serious?
The 5 year chiropractic training programme equips us as chiropractors
with the skills to decide whether or not the problems that we encounter
are suitable for chiropractic treatment. If we feel that chiropractic is
not appropriate for the cause of your symptoms, you well be referred to
your GP or to a suitable specialist.
How much does it cost?
An initial consultation costs £48 and subsequent treatment is £35
per visit. There are discounts for under 16's.
Can I claim the cost of my treatment on my private healthcare insurance?
Yes, we are registered with all major healthcare insurers including BUPA and PPP.
I work during the day, can I still come?
We offer evening appointments on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, we open at 8am on Tuesdays and Thursdays and we are open on Saturday morning.
My GP doesn't recommend chiropractors, can I still come?
Yes, your GP does not have to refer you to us as we are a private
clinic. You are free to make your own health choices. The Royal College of
General Practitioners recommend Chiropractic, so your GP should follow
their guidelines and recommend you for certain conditions.
I thought my pain was muscular
More often than not it is an underlying joint that is causing the
problem. A painful joint will trigger a muscle spasm around it, so that
muscular pain may be part of the problem, but without adjusting the joint
your pain will always come back. This is why many people find they only
have limited success when other health care providers only address the
muscular side of the problem.
Is chiropractic suitable during pregnancy?
Yes, chiropractic treatment is suitable and safe throughout pregnancy
and after giving birth. Chiropractic care can help with common problems
associated with pregnancy such as pain in the back, pelvis and rib cage.
Removing these problems with the joints and ligaments can often ease the
pain of labour.
Can babies and children be treated?
The whole family can benefit from chiropractic care, although
techniques used to treat babies obviously differ dramatically from those
of adults. It is a good idea to have babies checked soon after birth. Any
spinal or joint problems can then be dealt with early on before they cause
further problems. Talk to your chiropractor to find out more.
What is the difference between chiropractic and osteopathy?
There are differences in technique and approach, as well as some
similarities. The important factor is that the practitioner is well
qualified. Both professions now have statutory regulation.
